JOB POSTING: Executive Director - Wetaskiwin Theatre Society

The Wetaskiwin Theatre Society (WTS) is a non-profit, volunteer-based, community theater in its 17th year of continuous operation. WTS’s mission is to serve the community by operating and maintaining its unique facility -The Manluk Theatre for the Performing Arts.

WTS partners with the Waterworks Players to offer community theatre productions, and with community organizations to present a variety events at the Manluk Theatre.

The Executive Director will manage the venue operations and marketing for the Manluk Theatre.

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall strategic management of the organization including the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures in support of WTS’s vision and mission.

The Executive Director will represent the Manluk Theatre at community events and in communications with patrons, donors, volunteers, and other community organizations and will report directly to the Wetaskiwin Theatre Society Board of Directors.

This is a part-time contract position (16 hours per week) for 1 year with possibility of an extension.  The successful candidate must be flexible in their availability as the weekly schedule will vary throughout the theatre season.

Under the general direction of the Chair and the Board of Directors the Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and marketing management supporting the successful operation of the facility and performances of the organization.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Operation and Planning

  • Supports operations by providing administrative support, advice or information to the Board as well as promoting WTS, WWP & stakeholders
  • Participate with the Board in developing & executing a strategic plan and operational plan to guide the organization
  • Develop a marketing plan with the Board to incorporate goals & objectives working towards its strategic plan
  • Maintain accurate filing system and ensure personnel, client, donor & volunteer files are securely stored & privacy/confidentiality is maintained
  • Draft policies for the approval of the Board, prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies; review existing policies on an annual basis & recommend changes to the Board as appropriate; maintain and/or edit the Policy Manual
  • Attend all Board meetings or Committee meetings as necessary and provide a written monthly report
  • Manage all venue operations including bookings and rentals
  • Establish a positive, healthy, respectful & safe public environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation & regulations
  • Develop a safety & emergency plan for the facility
  • Address issues as necessary in accordance with policies; work with volunteers to resolve performance issues & concerns in a respectful manner & using appropriate procedures
  • Oversee the planning, implementation & evaluation of services
  • Complete a strategic “5 Year Business Plan” in collaboration with the Board & interested Theatre supporters society members
  • Coordinate the operation of facility heads
  • Coordinate & write an update for Annual Report for Board review & AGM
  • Coordinate, write & edit website content
  • Recruit, assign, train volunteers within WTS policies
  • Discipline or dismiss volunteers within WTS policies


  • Develop & maintain a 1 – 2 year marketing plan
  • Develop relationships in the city & surrounding community promoting the Theatre productions events & as a facility rental
  • Attend community networking meetings within/outside the city
  • Write, edit, design brochures, ads, programs for marketing
  • Create & maintain an on-going donation in kind opportunity
  • Actively promote WTS by recruiting donations, talent & activities for the facility
  • Communicate with stakeholders keeping them informed of potential partnerships & identify changes in the community
  • Promote Theatre attendance & usage to diverse cultural purposes (corporate, educational, cultural promotions, weddings, celebrations)


  • Strong organizational skills including planning, delegating, program development
  • Knowledge of human resources, budgeting, creative marketing in a small city, working knowledge of project management
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to the non-profit sector
  • An organized and detail-oriented approach to work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office and email
  • Ability to effectively represent the Board and the Society
  • Ability to lead, motivate, manage and collaborate with diverse volunteers, corporate or individual donors and sponsors
  • Demonstrate creativity in the development of advertising and marketing tools
  • Demonstrate a genuine passion to enrich the community with creative opportunities in relation to the arts
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in an environment with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge/experience with diverse cultures is considered an asset
  • Flexibility in availability
  • Must possess the ability to demonstrate tact & diplomacy at all times & to work in an environment of confidentiality yet have FUN
